Study title – Research and CPD offer for School Chaplains, namely the Induction Provision and the Practical Offer
Invitation and brief summary
This project is part of a Research and Development partnership with Centre for Chaplaincy in Education (CCE). Newman are being funded by CCE to carry out research and development within the sector to find out current status of training of School Chaplains within the UK; the training/ CPD needs of Chaplains in Schools, FE and Sixth Forms and to explore what training/induction/CPD programme(s) would be viable.
What is the research about?
This stage of the research is about the role of chaplains in Schools, FE and Sixth Forms, what training chaplains have received and what is needed, the skills needed and utilised by chaplains and how these are developed.
Who is the research funded by?
The Centre for Chaplaincy in Education.
Why have I been chosen to participate?
People working in or engaging with chaplaincy in school, FE or Sixth forms are being invited to participate to share their experiences of the roles, skills and therefore training needed to support those working as chaplains in these settings.
What do I have to do if I agree to participate?
Participation involves completing this questionnaire, which should take no longer than 30minutes and consists of a mixture of ‘tick box’ closed questions and some question for you to complete more openly. You will be asked questions about the role of a chaplain, what training chaplain’s have and should receive, and what skills are needed.
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
Your responses will provide data to shape the future of induction, training and support for school chaplains across England and Wales.
What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?
Participation is voluntary and there is no requirement to take part.
What happens if I want to withdraw?
At the end of completing this survey you will be presented with a completion receipt with a uniquie receipt number. This can be printed out, sent via email or downloaded as a PDF.
If you wish to withdraw from the study, you will need to contact the researchers at CCE@newman.ac.uk quoting your unique receipt number.
If you wish to offer your particaption in the next stage of the research, an interview with the researchers, please use the link at the end of the survey, which is not connected to any of the information that you provide in this survey.
How will the data be used?
The researchers will collate data from across all the questionnaires and share as a set of results, turning it into a presentable format for the Project Steering Group. The researchers will lead the PSG in an inductive process allowing the data to be reread and reflected on for the themes to be interpreted.
All questions are optional and you are free to decline to answer any question. Confidentiality would be breached only if you were to disclose information about risk of harm to another person or yourself that relates to a duty of care.
All data will be anonymized. Anonymity will be maintained by ensuring that no participants names are divulged in any of the reporting or dissemination activities. Confidentiality will be maintained by ensuring that all recorded material is safely stored on password protected secure data storage facilities (e.g. Files on Newman computers only accessible to the researchers, specifically the Newman one Drive and an external hard drive). The researchers under the Newman Code of Practice for Research guidelines on Research Data (2017 p.4) have a contractual requirement to protect the security of the research data. Paper-based consent forms will be scanned and stored in the same way, with the paper copies being securely shredded afterwards. Paper data will, whilst in use, be stored in a locked drawer at Newman university and once the data gathering and analysis is complete, it will be electronically reproduced (photographed or scanned) and stored in the same way as all other electronic data. The original paper data will be securely disposed of. Data will be stored for at least five years before being destroyed.
